Dr. Adrian Hill

The Adrian Hill, LSM Bursary was created by Dr. Adrian Hill, JD, LSM who graduated from Osgoode in 1974. Adrian was a trial lawyer for thirty years before teaching and writing manuals on addictions, mental illness and work life balance. He is an author and the editor of Canada's National Suicide Prevention Strategy. This bursary will be given to a student(s) graduating from the JD program who has incurred significant educational debt in order to pursue their legal education; demonstrated a commitment to serving the public interest (e.g. relevant academic, work and volunteer experience); and intends to pursue a career in social justice.

Alan and Esther Hockin

This award is presented to the graduating BBA/iBBA student who has achieved the highest distinction in academic standing. No application required.

Awarded to a graduating undergraduate student in the Department of Music in recognition of an outstanding piece of scholarly (written) work in an upper- level course in music. Overall grade standing is not a criterion. The Alan Lessem Memorial Award commemorates the late Professor Alan Lessem, his contributions to the field of musicology and the musical community, and his many years of service to the Department of Music and the Faculty of Fine Arts. No application required.

Alumni Office and the York University Alumni Association

Established by the Alumni Office and the York University Alumni Association in honour of York's 50th Anniversary, this award expresses our gratitude to a graduating student who has made the University a better place during his/her time at York. This award will be granted to graduating students who have demonstrated significant leadership in campus life, including but not limited to: student clubs, varsity athletics, residence life, student government, academics and research, SC&LD activities, building bridges between York students and alumni.

The Antonio Di Domenico '05 Prize is given annually to a graduating student who, throughout their JD degree, has demonstrated academic excellence and leadership in student life at Osgoode. Antonio Di Domenico was very active at both Osgoode and York. He was Chair of Student Caucus of Faculty Council from 2004 to 2005, and served as a Governor on York's Board of Governors and Senate. He went on to an accomplished career in law, which he credits in great part to his studies at Osgoode.

This award is made annually to a Founders College student majoring in history and/or humanities who has achieved the highest cumulative grade point average in courses taken in the major department and/or division. No student may receive the award more than once. In order to qualify for this award, students must have attained a minimum grade point average of 6.00 (B) in their major department and/or division.

These awards are presented to graduating BBA/iBBA students who have distinguished themselves academically and have displayed dedication and strong interest in one of five functional areas (accounting, marketing, finance, management science and general business). Plaques will be presented at convocation.

Established by classmates and friends in memory of Benjamin Laufer (LLB, 1979). This prize will be awarded to a graduating student of Osgoode Hall Law School who has attained the highest standing in the fields of Public and Private International Law. To be eligible, students must take a minimum of three courses in International Law subjects.

Each year, two top students in the Bergeron Entrepreneurs in Science & Technology (BEST) Specialty will be identified and awarded for their academic achievement and/or entrepreneurial excellence with the Bergeron Entrepreneur Medal. This unique interdisciplinary program in entrepreneurship and new ventures will provide and teach real world business experience to aspiring student-entrepreneurs. A special notation will appear on the selected recipients' transcript.

Candidate must have at least one year of outstanding service and be committed to peer advising and academic community building. The individual should follow through and perform beyond reasonable expectation as well as take responsibility and being proactive academic community contributors. They should also be involved in ‘behind the scenes’ endeavors, supporting various academic initiatives at Bethune College as well as helping fellow students with the transition through university. These scholarships are only granted if there are suitable candidates with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 7.50.

The candidate must have served two to three years of academic student service with outstanding leadership qualities including constantly leading by example. The individual should consistently create new programs or important initiatives and dedicate an extensive time commitment to them. The individual should also be involved initiating various academic programs at Bethune College as well as helping fellow students transition through university. The candidates must have been part of student organizations/clubs, played a role in training new members and provided positive community support as well as focused leadership. They should be advocates of building community spirit and on the whole contribute to making a difference.

Brazier Family Prize

Awarded at Glendon convocation, this prize recognizes the special achievement of a graduating student with a disability who has overcome major challenges in the pursuit of his or her degree. This award has been established in honour of the Brazier family, in particular Glendon graduate Heather Brazier who achieved her bachelor of arts degree against seemingly impossible physical odds.

The Business Economics Department Book Prize is awarded to a graduating BUEC major at Glendon College, York University in recognition of excellent academic achievement and outstanding contribution to the BUEC program. This prize is available annually but may not be awarded annually.

Awarded to the most outstanding graduating student in Honours biology as determined by the department. The criteria used will not be limited to grades but will include such things as research potential and leadership activities within the department. The C.D. Fowle and B. Rozario Trust Fund was established in 1989 to honour the founding chairman of the Department of Biology, Professor Fowle, a well-known Canadian naturalist and conservationist.

Canadian Studies Departmental Prize is awarded to a graduating Canadian studies major at Glendon College, York University in recognition of excellent academic achievement. This prize is available annually but may not be awarded annually.

A scholarship in recognition of studio performance is awarded annually, in the spring, to a student in the Department of Visual Arts, School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design.

This prize was founded by subscription of the members of the Bench and Bar of Ontario in memory of the late Christopher Robinson, K.C. The prize is awarded to the member of the graduating class of Osgoode Hall Law School who takes second place in the examinations of the final year.

The Class of 2014 Bursary was created to celebrate the class of 2014 graduation and create a legacy for future students. It will be given annually to a graduating JD student who has incurred significant debt pursuing her/his legal education who intends to pursue a career in the public interest.

The Consulate General of Romania is offering an award in the form of a book prize to the best student studying linguistics at Glendon.

David J. Carinci '95, '00 (LLM) endowed this prize in memory of his father, Dominic Carinci, a noted land developer in the Greater Toronto area. The award is to be given annually to the graduating student who achieves third highest standing in both Real Estate and Business Association.

Awarded to the graduating Norman Bethune College Residence student in any Honours program who has demonstrated commitment to internationalist, health and society concerns or community leadership.

Awarded to a graduating student in recognition of the highest degree of scholarship and an outstanding undergraduate career.

Awarded to the graduating student from the Faculty of Science who has combined the highest degree of academic achievement with the greatest contribution to undergraduate student life at York.

Faisal Mirza, class of 2001, is a criminal trial and appeal lawyer. He honed his legal writing skills while at Osgoode Hall. This part of his education established a valuable foundation for effective trial and appellate advocacy. He established this prize to be given to the student who is judged to have written the best essay in a criminal law course.

Recognizes outstanding achievements within the student’s major department. Each award will consist of a certificate and transcript notation. Recipients will not necessarily need to have the highest academic standing but will have demonstrated excellence in a particular area with their major department.

The French Department Prize is given to a student graduating from the French program for his or her academic accomplishment. This prize is given once a year at the discretion of the French program.

Established by the Class of 1933 as a 5Oth year reunion project. This memorial book prize, named in honour of George Graham Sinclair, is to be awarded annually to the Gold Medalist. A special bookplate has been designed to commemorate the award. 'Gus' Sinclair, educated at Upper Canada College, the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School, graduated from Osgoode in 1933, die at Dieppe in 1942. Captain Sinclair was killed in action on Puys Beach.

Established by George M. Miller Q.C. of Sudbury, Ontario, this prize may be awarded to the student in their final year who was born in, or who has resided in, or whose parents have resided in Northern Ontario during the three years immediately preceding the final examination. Amoung those who are eligible, it will be granted to the student who has obtained the highest standing in the final year examinations. For the purpose of this prize, Northern Ontario is defined as that part of Ontario lying north and west of a line drawn from the town of Mattawa to the town of Parry Sound, including those towns.

Glendon Convocation Prize of Distinction is awarded to the Glendon student, graduating from an undergraduate degree program with the highest academic standing.

The Glendon Sexuality Studies Prize is awarded to a graduating Sexuality Studies major at Glendon College, York University in recognition of excellent academic achievement. This prize is available annually but may not be awarded annually.

The Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Toronto Centre will be awarded, when warranted, to the top graduating astronomy major with a cumulative grade point average greater than or equal to 7.50 who has satisfied the requirements of a 120 credit Honours BSc program in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Awarded in the spring of the year to a graduating BBA/iBBA student. The student will have demonstrated satisfactory academic performance, and in the view of the awards committee, have made the most contribution to the School during their years in the Faculty.

The Governor General’s Silver Medal will be awarded annually to three graduating undergraduate students (from the October, February or June convocation) who have shown the highest distinction in scholarship at York University. The medals will be awarded at the June convocation.

Established in memory of Harry S. Crowe, member of the History Department and twice Dean of Atkinson, this award is available to the student whose academic achievement in any Liberal Arts & Professional Studies course with significant historical content is the highest within a calendar year. An essay may be submitted for consideration either by the writer or by the course director for whom it was written. It is awarded for courses completed in the previous fall/winter and summer session.

This award is made annually to an outstanding graduating student in the design area of the Department of Theatre, School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design. The prize, awarded for excellence in achievement in theatrical design studies, is in memory of Herman Geiger-Torel, founder of the Canadian Opera Company.

The Hispanic Studies Department Prize is awarded to a graduating Hispanic studies major at Glendon College, York University in recognition of excellent academic achievement. This prize is available annually but may not be awarded annually.

Awarded annually to the graduating student attaining the highest standing in Advanced Torts. This prize has been created through the generosity of Hyman Bergel (LLB '70).

Presented annually to graduating Osgoode students who, through their writing, have shown insight and intelligence in bringing attention to issues of importance for feminism(s), including but not limited to gender, poverty, sexuality, sexual orientation, violence against women, gender and racism, gender and Indigeneity, and equality. Research papers on relevant themes should be nominated by Osgoode faculty. The nomination must include a short statement (up to 250-300 words) by the instructor justifying the nomination. One Award winner will be selected. The recipient may be profiled on the IFLS website. Since this Award is intended to recognize Osgoode students who have made important contributions, but have not otherwise been recognized, recipients of other graduation awards such as the Dean’s Gold Key, are not eligible.

The International Studies Departmental Prize is awarded to a graduating international studies major at Glendon College, York University in recognition of excellent academic achievement. This prize is available annually but may not be awarded annually.

This Prize is awarded each year to a graduating Osgoode Hall Law student who has demonstrated high achievement in courses and/or research in the area of Real Estate law.

This award is given in memory of Jack F. Graydon, a founder of the Professional Marketing Research Society and a pioneer in the marketing research industry in Canada. Awarded to a graduating BBA/iBBA student, who is judged to have achieved the highest proficiency in marketing research and related courses.

Presented annually to the graduating bachelor in environmental studies student whose record at York comprises the best all round combination of academic achievement and extracurricular activity. This award honours Jack Ellis, professor of environmental studies and the Bachelor in Environmental Studies program’s founding program director.

The John Bruckmann Prize in European History is awarded to a graduating history major, at Glendon, with the highest average in European history in recognition of excellent academic achievement. This prize is available annually but may not be awarded annually.

An annual scholarship will be awarded to a Year 4 student in the Department of Visual Arts. The prime consideration for the award is merit in sculpture. A secondary factor is overall academic standing. This is a spring award.

The Lassonde School of Engineering Citizenship Medal is awarded annually to an outstanding graduating undergraduate student in recognition of their extracurricular contributions to University life, to their school or acadmic department, or to Lassonde as a whole.

The Lassonde School of Engineering Gold Medal is awarded annually to an outstanding graduating undergraduate student in recognition of the highest academic achievement in the Lassonde School of Engineering.

The Lassonde School of Engineering Research Medal is awarded annually to an outstanding graduating undergraduate student in the Lassonde School of Engineering showing promise as a researcher.

The Linguistics and Language Studies Departmental Prize is awarded to a graduating linguistics and language major at Glendon College, York University in recognition of excellent academic achievement. This prize is available annually but may not be awarded annually.

Established by the Estate Planning Council of Toronto, partners, family and friends to commemorate the completion of Martin J. Rochwerg term as President of the Council. The prize will be awarded annually to the graduating student who achieved the highest standing in the tax and fiduciary courses, taking a minimum of two courses from each of the tax group, and the estates and trusts group.

The Martin Lockshin Award in Jewish Studies will be awarded every other year to a graduating student in Jewish studies with the highest combined grade average for the last two undergraduate years. In case of more than one winner, the award will be divided equally among the qualifying candidates.

The Master's Award for Academic Excellence will be awarded annually to the five graduating Stong College students with the highest cumulative grade point averages.

Awarded to the graduating Norman Bethune College student in any Honours program who achieves the highest grades in that final year of full-time study.

This prize was founded by the late Matthew Wilson, K.C. The annual income of the fund is paid to the member of the graduating class of Osgoode Hall Law School who takes third place in the examinations of the final year.

Awarded to a Year 3 or 4 graduating student showing outstanding service to McLaughlin College, in constituency and student organizations.

Murray G. Ross Award

This award, established by the student council in 1962 in honour of York’s first president, is presented annually to a graduating student for scholarship and outstanding contributions to undergraduate student life. The recipient of this award will receive a medal at their convocation ceremony.

Established in 1987, the O.E.C.T.A. Award is awarded on the basis of professional and academic excellence, and is open to all candidates graduating from their third year of the Pre-Service program who have completed ED/EDUC 3000 3.0, Teaching Religious Education in the Roman Catholic Separate Schools or Religious Education: Teaching in Catholic Schools, offered through he Research and Professional Development Office. This award was established by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association. A second award is available for candidates graduating from the Consecutive program. To receive this award, teacher candidates must be recommended by a course director from the York University Faculty of Education

Awarded on the basis of professional and academic excellence to Faculty of Education students graduating from the consecutive program who have completed ED/EDUC 3000 3.00, Teaching Religious Education in the Roman Catholic Separate Schools. This award was established by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association.

The Originality Prize in Memory of Paul Jeffrey Kusyszyn will be awarded to a fourth year, full time undergraduate York University student enrolled in the Department of Psychology. The prize will be awarded to the student with the most original BA honours thesis; to be eligible for this Prize, students must have received a minimum 'A' grade on their BA Honours thesis. The Prize is only to be awarded if the thesis truly exemplifies 'outside the norm' originality as determined by the selection committee.

On the occasion of Osgoode Hall Law School's 125th Anniversary, the Osgoode @125 Fund was established through a student-led fundraising initiative to provide support to JD students who are graduating having incurred significant debt pursuing their legal education in order to allow them to pursue a diversity of career car paths. Interest from the fund will be distributed annually for debt relief through such programs as exit bursaries and forgivable loans.'

The OSSTF/FEESO Faculty of Education Award, valued at $1,000 annually, shall be awarded to the graduating Intermediate/Senior or Technological Studies Teacher Candidate who applies for the award and who in the opinion of his/her Faculty of Education’s Awards Committee has shown a clear understanding and empathy for the values of unionism, is attempting to secure a job with a public secondary board, and who best exemplifies the award criteria.

Awarded on the basis of professional and academic excellence to a candidate graduating from Year 3 of the pre-service program, with a minimum grade point average of 6.00 in their academic faculty and a minimum grade point average of 7.00 in the Faculty of Education. Awarded annually to a psychology major with the highest mark in GL/PSYC 4240 3.00 Advanced Experimental Design (or equivalent). This award has been established in honour of Ronald Cohen who taught research methodology and other related courses in the Glendon Psychology Department for 25 years.

The Ronald J. Rolls '58, Q.C. Prize will be given annually to the student who stands first in each section of civil procedure, which is part of the Legal Process course. Ronald J Rolls practiced civil litigation at Fasken Martineu for over 40 years. He co-authored a number of books on civil procedure including The Law of Civil Procedure.

An annual award presented at the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design convocation reception in both June and October to honour the graduating student who has achieved the highest cumulative grade point average in the Faculty among those graduating with first-class standing. No application required.

The Sexuality Studies Academic Achievement Prize is awarded to a graduating student minoring in Sexuality Studies, a graduating student who has completed a Sexuality Studies certificate, or non-degree student who has completed a Sexuality Studies certificate. The recipient will have achieved the highest cumulative grade point average in Sexuality Studies program courses. Students who have applied to receive their degree or certificate in the previous 12 months are eligible.

The Sexuality Studies Outstanding Student Contribution Award is presented to a graduating student with a minor in Sexuality Studies, a graduating student who has completed a Sexuality Studies Certificate, or a non-degree student who has completed a Sexuality Studies certificate for outstanding undergraduate student contributions to the Sexuality Studies Program and the development of sexuality studies at York. Students who have applied to receive their degree or certificate in the previous 12 months are eligible. The award is for contributions made during the student's entire career at York and relevant contributions made outside of York may also be taken into consideration.

The Shoshana Kurtz Book Prize is donated by the Board of Jewish Education in recognition of Dr. Kurtz’s outstanding contribution to Jewish education. The award will be given to a graduating student in the Jewish Teacher Education program—based on academic performance and professional promise.

Graduating students who distinguish themselves in the study of Kinesiology and Health Science will be named to the Tait McKenzie Honour Society at convocation. Members include graduating Honours kinesiology and health science majors who have achieved a cumulative grade average of 6.00 (B) or higher, a grade point average of 7.50 in Kinesiology and Health Science academic courses and have successfully completed a minimum of two practicum courses.

The Technical and Professional Communication Certificate Prize is awarded to the top Glendon student graduating with this certificate in recognition of excellent academic achievement. This prize is available annually but may not be awarded annually.

The Bronze Medal is awarded annually at Spring Convocation to the student in the graduating class who stands third with the third highest cumulative grade point average over all three years of Law School.

These awards are given annually to students graduating from the JD program at Osgoode Hall Law School who have made an outstanding contribution to the Law School. Recipients will have demonstrated exceptional leadership, commitment and enthusiasm through their participation in extra-curricular activities, Law School or University governance, clinical education, the Osgoode Hall Law Journal, or other similar endeavors.

The Gold Medal is awarded annually at Spring Convocation to the student in the graduating class who stands first with the highest cumulative grade point average over all three years of Law School.

This prize is awarded annually to the student in the Trial Advocacy course who best embodies Paul Bentley's qualities of civility, gentility and professionalism.

The Marion Perry Prize is intended to recognize a graduating Consecutive program teacher candidate. All graduating students in the Consecutive program will be eligible. The prize will be awarded at the June convocation to the student who has shown the most outstanding qualities in scholarship, teaching ability and character throughout the year.

The Master's Award for Academic Excellence will be awarded to the graduating Calumet College student who has the highest cumulative grade point average. To be eligible, the recipient must have completed a minimum of 60 credits at York University.

The Peterson Family Gold Medal & Scholarship in Entrepreneurial Studies is awarded to a graduating undergraduate student who has pursued the Entrepreneurial & Family Business Studies concentration and achieved high academic standing in the concentration and also demonstrates true entrepreneurial spirit and drive.

The Rhodes Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest and most prestigious international scholarship for postgraduate study. Funded from the will of Cecil Rhodes and established in 1903, the Rhodes provides full funding (tuition, living expenses and some funding for travel) for two years of study at Oxford, with a possible extension for a third year.

This award is given once a year to a Vanier College graduating student for academic excellence (minimum 7.50 grade point average) and their outstanding contribution to Vanier College.

The firm of WeirFoulds has established a prize in memory of Robert B. Robinson, Q.C. to be awarded annually to the student achieving the highest standing in Administrative Law.

The Winters College Book Prize for Contribution to College Life is awarded to a Winters College student who has made outstanding contributions to the improvement of college life.

The Winters College Book Prize for Contribution to College Residence Life is awarded to a Winters College student who has made outstanding contributions to the improvement of residential life.

Awarded to Winters students with high academic standing in their fourth year of studies. Student must be registered in the following Faculties: Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, Science, Lassonde, or Fine Arts. Demonstration of college activity is preferred.

This award was founded by subscription of the members of the Women's Law Association of Ontario. The annual income of the fund is paid to the member of the graduating class who obtains the highest standing in the subject of Estate Planning.
